The trio
Formed in Honolulu in 2024, MikAnS is a collaboration among three professional artists, bringing shamisen, taiko, shinobue, and voice together in modern interpretations of Japanese folk music.
Each member brings deep command of their own craft and extensive experience as both a professional performer and educator. Together, the trio honors the character of minyō while creating a contemporary performance experience—rhythmic, melodic, playful, and deeply collaborative.
Taiko · vocals
Mikey is a taiko performer and instructor with more than 35 years of experience. A former performing member of Nihon Taiko Dojo, he studied under Kiyonari Tosha Sensei and now teaches and performs in Hawaiʻi and beyond, emphasizing sound quality, fluid movement, and efficient body mechanics.
Shamisen · lead vocals
Anju is a shamisen performer, minyō vocalist, and instructor from Osaka. She is Deputy Head of Madoka no Kai’s Osaka headquarters and representative of its Hawaiʻi branch, which she established in 2022. She has performed internationally and released her album Gannenmono in 2020.
Taiko · shinobue · vocals
Sho’on is a taiko and shinobue performer and educator from Fukuoka. He holds a master’s degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and has performed professionally with Taiko Center of the Pacific and the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble. His work draws from Japanese music alongside diverse global influences.
